GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) -
      The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science. GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.
      The GATE score of a candidate reflects the relative performance level of a candidate. The score is used for admissions to various post-graduate education programs (e.g. Master of Engineering, Master of Technology, Doctor of Philosophy) in Indian higher education institutes, with financial assistance provided by MHRD and other government agencies. Recently, GATE scores are also being used by several Indian public sector undertakings (i.e., government-owned companies) for recruiting graduate engineers in entry-level positions. It is one of the most competitive examinations in India. Based on the success story of IITs all over the world, GATE is also recognized by various international institutes such as Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.1
Important:
Admissions in IITs/IISc or other Institutes for M.Tech./Ph.D. through GATE 2017 scores shall be advertised separately by the Institutes and GATE 2017 does not take the responsibility of admissions.
Cabinet Secretariat has decided to recruit officers for the post of Senior Field Officer (Tele) (From GATE papers of EC, CS, PH), Senior Research Officer (Crypto) (From GATE papers of EC, CS, MA), Senior Research Officer (S&T) (From GATE papers EC, CS, CY, PH, AE, BT) in the Telecommunication Cadre, Cryptographic Cadre and Science & Technology Unit respectively of Cabinet Secretariat. The details of the scheme of recruitment shall be published in National Newspaper/ Employment News by the concerned authority.
Some Government of India Organizations have expressed their interest to utilize GATE 2017 scores for their recruitment purpose. The Organizations who intend to utilize GATE 2017 scores shall make separate advertisement for this purpose in Newspapers and shall also contact the Organizing Institute of GATE 2017, IIT Roorkee for this purpose.
GATE exams are primarily meant for candidates who have completed their degrees or are studying in final year (except in some 5 year integrated courses and AMIE etc.). Hence, candidates who have degree completion certificate can upload their degree certificate as eligibility criteria. In case, the degree certificate has not been issued at the time of application, if mark sheets of 7 th or 8 th semester are issued, one of the mark sheets can be uploaded as eligibility criteria. There shall be some candidates who have completed their degree, but do not have the degree certificate/provisional certificate/7th and 8 th semester mark sheet, can upload 6 th semester mark sheet as eligible criteria. Candidates with backlog papers but are studying in final year can also appear in GATE 2017. Candidates who completed degree (incomplete due to backlog papers) can upload course completion certificate/6 th semester mark sheet or the provisional certificate letter (as shown in page no. 16 or page no. 52)
Candidates who are studying in India with Nationality of Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates or other foreign candidates are eligible to write GATE examinations in India or in Centers in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates. The fees for such candidates writing GATE exams in India shall be Rs. 1500.00, where as if they prefer to write the GATE 2017 examination in Centers in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates shall have to pay a fee of USD 50. Similarly, Indian students preferring to write GATE 2017 examinations in GATE International Centers in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates shall be charged USD 50 as examination fees.

General Information on GATE 2018
1. Application Process: For GATE 2018, all information related to the candidates will be available in a single GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS). Candidates have to register and fill the application via ONLINE mode ONLY. The photograph, signature, thumb impression, qualifying degree certificate, and category certificate (SC/ST/PwD) wherever applicable, must be uploaded during the online application. Candidates shall be required to enter the specified number in their identification card of any one of Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar UID, valid College ID, Employee identification or and Driving License. The candidates who do not have any of these identity cards, may please get one of these cards issued before application procedure. Please note that no application form is available for sale anywhere. For International candidates, ONLY a valid Passport/ Government issued ID/College ID/ Employee ID shall be accepted as the recognized identification.
2. Admit Card: Admit cards have to be downloaded from the GOAPS website tentatively from 5th January 2017. The candidate has to bring a printed copy of the admit card to the test centre along with the original identification card whose number has been given in the application (Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar UID, Valid College ID, Employee identification card or Driving License). For International candidates, ONLY a valid Passport/ Government issued ID/College ID/ Employee ID shall be accepted as the recognized identification. The only permitted photo identifications are; Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar UID, Valid College ID, Employee identification card or Driving License. NO candidate shall be allowed to enter the examination hall (however, the Center gate shall be closed 25 minutes after start of the examination) after 30 minutes of the start of the examination.
3. Types of Questions: The GATE examination shall be of 3 hours duration with a maximum of 100 marks. The question paper for GATE 2017 will consist of questions of both multiple-choice type and numerical answer type. For multiple choice type questions, candidates have to choose the answer from the given choices. For numerical answer type questions, candidates have to enter a number as the answer using a virtual keypad.

For women/SC/ST/PWD – Rs 750/-
Other Candidates – Rs 1500/-
International Candidates – US$ 50/-
Correction Fee:
      The correction fee payment will be done via online mode only. No challan payment will be accepted. The correction fee is mentioned below:
For changes from SC/ST to General/OBC is Rs.750/-.
For changes from Female to Male/Others is Rs.750/-.
For changes from PwD to Non-PwD is Rs. 750/.
For changes in examination city is Rs. 400/-.
